The Power of One

About twenty years before the apartheid took place in South Africa a young English boy named PK was born. During this time period there were three main groups in South Africa, the native tribes, the English, and the Afrikaners. The native people were the lowest on the social scale and were highly discriminated against and forced back to slums of the cities. The English were next living in the cities but usually not welcomed. The top of the list were the Afrikaners, people of Dutch or German descent living in South Africa. PK was raised with a black boy about the same age as him, but when his mother dies he is taken to an Afrikaners school. Because PK saw both sides of the scale at an early age he learned how cruel racism can be and fought apartheid for most of his life. I learned a lot about South Africa, for instance I had never thought about how World War Two affected these people. The English and the Afrikaners were fighting each other again in this war which brought out more hatred towards each other. It was difficult to see many scenes, like when he was beat up at school, or when his friend, Geel Piet was killed by a prison guard, but still eye-opening because I really didn’t know that much about South Africa and the apartheid. I really liked this film; in fact it was my favorite in Global Ed. so far. I think everyone should see it at some point to learn the power of one.
